CHAPTER TWELVE

I S A A C

One of Murphy’s hairs graced his left knee. The blondish-white stood out against his black dress pants. He’d gone home that morning to shower and change and greet the technicians that would install the house alarm. Now it was nearing the hour when Everly would arrive. Daniella Lombardo, his fourth and final patient of the morning, was having a breakthrough revelation about the toxic relationship she had with her mother. He smiled wistfully at the stray dog hair, and an unexpected vision flashed in his mind. Everly’s orgasming body writhing in his hands as he brought her down from her peak.

Isaac cleared his throat and gazed with renewed focus into Daniella’s eyes while the woman spoke.

“I think I will confront her. For me, though. For myself,” Daniella said. “It’s like she isn’t capable of- of… oh what’s the word?”

“Empathy?” he suggested.

“Yes. So it has to be for me. Just getting the words out that I’ve been bottling up for so long.”

“And you’ll see her twice next weekend? At your son’s soccer game, and then the bridal shower… your cousin’s, right?”

“Yes.” Daniella sighed. “I don’t want to ruin any of that, though.”

“You need to speak with her privately then. Before the weekend. Because those events… the way you’re feeling… it’s already difficult for you to pretend the things she says to you don’t hurt.”

Daniella seemed to consider his suggestion. Isaac’s mind drifted again.

Feel, Isaac. Feel how much I want you.

I want to learn, Isaac. Teach me.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “What did you say?”

“I said, I’d better get going. You have no idea how much better I feel after these sessions. And you… are you all right? You seem…”

Distracted?

“Well,” she said with a laugh. “Nevermind. I could be wrong.”

“Do say. How do I seem?”

“Like there’s a woman you’re thinking about. You’ve got that ‘new relationship’ look about you.”

“You’re very insightful, Daniella. I apologize.”

“Don’t. It only brings your intensity and attention down from a hundred and ten percent to ninety-nine percent, anyway. Almost makes it easier to open up.”

He laughed. “Have a good week, Daniella. And be careful. I assume you heard the news this weekend.”

She shuddered. “Just awful. I didn’t grow up around here, but it seemed like such a nice community to move to, and now in the past year… Well, talk about a high violent crime rate.”

Like the victim on Little Coyote, Carolyn Donahue, Daniella was in her early thirties and a single mother. But then, there was the murdered man who had some mysterious connection to Carolyn, so maybe this killer’s victims had nothing to do with age or sex or status.

“Call me if there’s any blowback from confronting your mother. Or anything else troubling you. I’m always available.”

She nodded, gathering up her purse and taking her coat from the standing rack by the office door. “Thanks.”

Isaac opened the door for her. His breath caught when he saw Everly standing in the small waiting area. She’d put her hair into two French braids. She wore a backpack.
